What was the WTEFLAC Code of Practice and Why is it Still Relevant?

Although the WTEFLAC has now closed its code of practice remains relevant as a template by which all students can judge TEFL and TESOL courses.

From its earliest inception, the WTEFLAC had committed itself to improving standards within Teaching English as a Foreign Language education and providing prospective students with all the information and support they needed to make the right decision. Key to that was its landmark code of conduct and despite its closure, this serves as a valuable template for anyone looking for a course.

What the code of conduct says

The WTEFLAC was a private accreditation agency providing verification of TEFL and TESOL providers. Any provider of TEFL or TESOL providers could apply for accreditation. Their applications were reviewed by an accreditation board and, if successful, they would be able to display the WTEFL logo on their site.

The code of conduct provided a framework against which any assessment could be made. It covered all of the key factors that determine the quality and reliability of a TEFL provider.

  • Marketing material: All marketing material would have to provide an accurate reflection of the actual content of the course. Companies would also need to be upfront about their pricing with no hidden costs.

  • Course content: Courses should be clearly laid out in a sequential manner with a transparent measure of assessment. Assuming they complete the course, all students should receive a certificate at the end. The company should make every effort to update the course and ensure it evolves with the requirements of the market.

  • Teaching staff: All teachers should be qualified and have at least three years of hands-on experience teaching English as a foreign language.

  • Culture: The company should have a clear commitment to equal opportunities in the workplace and provide full training for all staff. There must also be a clear opportunity for professional progression within the workplace.

Assessments will be made against these criteria and, if necessary, would have been arranged to gather any additional information needed.

Ultimately, this is all about making sure the course provides value for money and is provided by genuine legitimate providers. In a busy online environment, it can be difficult to ensure a course is genuine and will truly provide all the knowledge and experience you need to continue your professional development.

How the code of conduct can help

Although the WTEFL is no longer with us, the code of conduct serves as a valuable guide for anyone assessing potential providers. It covers all the key attributes that differentiate high-quality professional institutions from the rest.

Using these criteria, you can quickly run your own independent assessment of a provider that delves deep behind the marketing hype and digs into what truly makes it a good or bad provider.
